Canada’s 150th Birthday
2017 is a special year for all our Canadian Members and Friends. This year marks Canada’s 150th Birthday! Yes… we know exactly what each and everyone of you is thinking… Wasn’t Canada established in 1534, isn’t 2017 – 1534= 483 and aren’t they celebrating a 375th anniversary too? Yes, Yes and Yes.
Canada’s first colony, New France, was established in 1534, just as the first American Colony, Colony and Dominion of Virginia, was established in 1607. These were just colonies and not self-governing nations.
2017 is also Montreal’s 375th anniversary. For those still reading, Montreal is a city in the Canadian Provence of Quebec. Montreal was established in 1642 as a mission to the Virgin Mary originally called Ville-Marie. So this is where the 375 comes from, 2017 – 1642 = 375th Anniversary. for Montreal
Now that we have that confusion taken care of. How is it Canada’s 150th Birthday?
After the French defeat in the Seven Years’ War in 1763, the Colony of New France was given to the British which renamed the area the Province of Quebec. During the next 100 years the province was divided into Lower Canada and Upper Canada, then reunited again as the Province of Canada. Finally in 1867, the Province of Canada was joined with the British colonies of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia to form a self-governing nation called Canada.
Happy 150th Birthday Canada!
