We started with 72 teams in 6 flights and whittled it down to the top 6 teams from each flight who made it to the afternoon shoot-out.

Congratulations to all the Flight Winners on Making the Shoot-Out

Shoot-Out Summary

On the first hole (#10) the team from Flight 1 (Robert Smith & Darren Tucker) made it through with a par and the team from Flight 5 (Richard Colt & D.L. Harvey) was eliminated with a 6. Since two teams are eliminated on the first hole we had to have a 4-way Closest to the Pin Playoff from the 100 yard marker between teams from Flight 2 (Steve McDaniel & Zach Zehnder), Flight 3 (Chris Boser & Clark Badie), Flight 4 (Bob Brewer & Ross Newhall), and Flight 6 (Steve Mapley & Steve Hall). The suspense was huge and no one hit the green. Unfortunately, the ball from Flight 4 was furthest and they were eliminated.

On the second hole (#11), we had four great tee-shots to the green, two that were puttable and two that might need to be chipped. Flight 2 (Steve McDaniel & Zach Zehnder) made a great putt for birdie and advanced to the finals. Flight 4 (Bob Brewer & Ross Newhall) made a 5 and were eliminated. Flight 1 (Robert Smith & Darren Tucker) hit a great putt that just burned the edge, but made 3. Flight 3 (Chris Boser & Clark Badie) just burned the edge for 3, made a 4 and were eliminated.

So we were left with two teams on the final hole #14, Flight 2 (Steve McDaniel & Zach Zehnder) and Flight 1 (Robert Smith & Darren Tucker). McDaniel had the honors as his partner Zehnder had made the birdie putt on 11. He stepped up and hit a long foul ball over by #10 green. Next up was Tucker from Flight 1 and the lefty ripped a nice cut down the middle just over the bunker.

After we found the ball just off Hole #10 green (We were playing #14). Zehnder from Flight 2 stepped up and hit high down #10 fairway with a perfect draw bringing it just in front of the Vistas #14 greenside bunker (It really was a great shot!). Next up we had Smith from Flight 1 who had a dicey lie in the rough just over the bunker. He hit it forward (not the greatest) and it chased down the hill behind the tree about 130 yards from the green. They didn't lose their turn and Smith's partner, Tucker, was left with a tough shot that he had to start over the water (lefty) and hook back to the green. He hit a towering wedge that started to hook right at the hole but flew the green about about 10 yards (Safe and Not Wet!).

So at this point Flight 2 (Steve McDaniel & Zach Zehnder) lie 2 just in front of the green and Flight 1 (Robert Smith & Darren Tucker) lie 3 just over the green. McDaniel was next up and being the good sport he is, attempted to give the team from Flight 2 another chance by proceeding to dump his pitch into the bunker, leaving a pretty awkward shot for his partner Zehnder. They didn't lose their turn and Zehnder stepped in and pulled some more magic from his bag. He hit an awesome long bunker shot to about 4 feet. It was 4 feet, but a slider. Seriously, McDaniel brought a ringer!

So where are we at now....  Flight 1 (Robert Smith & Darren Tucker) lie 3 just over the green and Flight 2 (Steve McDaniel & Zach Zehnder) lie 4 with sliding 4 footer. Next up was Smith with a pretty tough downhill chip. He was cautious of the water and left it just off the green for his partners par attempt. His partner, Tucker was cautious as well and left it about 6 feet short of the hole. Now they were left with a tricky downhill slider for 6 that they had to make and hope the other team missed. Smith, lined it up and drained it like it was nothing, putting the pressure on McDaniel who now had a really tricky 4 footer for the win, but if he missed, we were going to extra holes. McDaniel lined it up, struck the putt, and everyone watched as it started to veer to the right. It just barely snuck it in the low side of the cup, ending a real nail bitter :)

Congratulations to the Shoot-Out Champions

We had great weather for the final round of the event (some might say hot). The course must have played a bit tough or the hot weather got to many of the players today as we only had 11 players shoot under their handicap, 9 players shoot to their handicap, and 124 players shoot over their handicap.

We had some outstanding play by a few guests; Darren Tucker shot a gross 66 (Net 69 as he is a +3), Ryan Bingham shot a gross 68 (Net 71 as he is +3) and Zach Zehnder and Chad Wilcox both shot gross 70 (Net 70 and Net 74 respectively). Our lowest net scores for the day were only 3 under with Net 69's by Ryan Bingham (Gross 66), Chris Boser (Gross 77), and Robert Brewer (Gross 77).

Thank you all for playing in such a fun event. It has been a while since we had a Men's Member/Guest, especially a very successful one. A special thank you needs to go out to the Men's Member/Guest Planning Committee who spent a tremendous amount of time to bring this event back to the club and make it successful!
