Assistant, Brandon Evans headed to Represent WBVGC in National Championship

Evans_USOpen

Our Assistant Professional, Brandon Evans will be representing Westbrook Village Golf Club in the 48th PGA Professional National Championship at the Philadelphia Cricket Club, in Flourtown, PA, from June 28-July 1. Dachelle Frey will be there as his caddie. The National Championship will host the top 312 PGA Professionals from around the world. The PGA of America and PGA Tour treat the PGA National Championship as a major championship for the PGA Professionals and spectators. The event consists of three days of practice rounds and four days for the Championship. The event will be using the Philadelphia Cricket Clubs' Militia and Wissahickon courses for a $700,000 purse. The Championship will have a cut after 36 holes and a second cut after 54 holes with the low 20 players earning a spot in the 98th PGA Championship at Whistling Straits on August 13-16. The winner of the National Championship will take home a check of $75,000, head up the 2015 PGA Cup vs. Europe and earn six exemptions on the 2015/2016 PGA Tour.

Brandon’s journey into the 48th PGA Professional National Championship started nearly a year ago when he qualified at Troon North last August with a 54 hole score of 7 under par. Brandon has been playing and practicing in preparation for this event. He recently took 2nd place in US Open Local Qualifying at Southern Dunes in May. His 2nd place finish qualified him for US Open Sectionals where he was assigned the Newport Beach Location. US Open Sectionals were held on June 8th and the Newport Beach location and consisted of 36 holes on two different courses, Newport Beach Country Club and Big Canyon Country Club. Brandon played well but was not one of the six players that advanced to the US Open at Chambers Bay. The play in Newport Beach was great practice in preparation for Philadelphia.

The PGA Professional National Championship is the most historic and prestigious event for PGA Club Professionals. Qualifying for the Championship is a great achievement and we wish him the best while representing WBVGC on a worldwide stage.

The 48th PGA Professional National Championship will be aired live on the Golf Channel as follows:
Sunday June 28 – 12PM – 2PM
Monday, June 29– 12:30PM – 3PM
Tuesday, June 30 – 12:30PM – 3:30PM
Wednesday, July 1 – 12PM – 3PM

Golf Course Maintenance Update (5/15/15)

I would like to let everyone know that the project is moving well at the RJP Estate Planning Lakes GC. The contractor has added new main line pipe on hole #5 and the back of #1 green this week. The process was a little slow because of the amount of rock that came out of the ground. Every load of dirt that goes into the ground to back fill the new pipe is screened so that there is no rock rubbing up against the new pipe. They are also using some of the old bunker sand that was removed from the bunkers for this purpose. The bunker renovation project is near completion. It has been an extensive process but the GCM staff has done an outstanding job and I am sure you will be pleased with the finished product. We anticipate completing the bunker project early next week.

There are some patches of yellowing on the fairways, tees, and around the greens at the Vistas GC. This is by design. We applied the herbicide I mentioned a few weeks ago to help us slowly check out the winter rye grass. I am very encouraged that there is a lot of summer Bermuda grass ready to grow. Once temperatures begin to warm up the Bermuda will move aggressively and green up in color. Although many of us are enjoying the cool weather, it is not ideal for our Bermuda grass.

I would like to offer myself to those who have any questions about the LIP project or the new bunkers. I will make myself available on Thursday May 21 at 11 am if anyone would like to see what is going on. Please email me at descobedo@wbvgc.com if you are interested.

Summer Handicap News

One of the basic premises underlying the USGA Handicap System is that “each player will try to make the best score at every hole in every round, regardless of where the round is played”. That means that just like the members who stay at Westbrook during the summer and post their scores, those of you who play else where during the summer are required to post your scores to our system also.

How to post your summer scores:

  1. Post them on your computer by going to GHIN .com. Put in the Slope and Rating of the course played, the name of the course and your score, adjusting it using ESC if needed
  2. Log on to the Westbrook Village Golf site at cms.wbvgc.com and click on the link on the side bar to post a score or to get instructions about how to post your score.
  3. Use your mobile device to post your scores. There is a free app that will allow you to post scores to the GHIN system easily right after playing. The GHIN Mobile app is available for use on Android and Apple products by downloading it at Google Play (formally the Android Market) , the App Store, or the iTunes Store. For Blackberry and Windows Phone/Windows Mobile users go to its mobile website m.GHIN.com. When launching the app you will be required to enter your GHIN number and last name for verification purposes.
  4. Bring back your scores, up to your last 20, and post them when you return.

SCORE POSTING For CANADIANS

It is now possible for Canadians who are members of a golf club in Canada as well as at Westbrook Village to link their score posting accounts at each club. This will mean that scores posted at one club will automatically be transferred to the other club and members will therefore no longer have to manually re-enter their last 20 scores when returning to either club.

The following information should be e-mailed to: members@golfcanada.ca or call 1-800-263-0009 ext. 399:

Rumors, Rumors, Rumors

Recently, several members asked about the status of the WBVGC water rights leasing program and the Lakes Irrigation Project (LIP).
The LIP is in full swing and steady progress is being made. WBVGC has been providing WBV HOA with water for a portion of their common areas in both Phase I & II since December. Recently, we began converting sub-HOAs in Phase II. We anticipate the program accelerating as the new water main systems, as part of the LIP, are activated on the RJP Estate Planning Lakes course. Five HOA/sub-HOA meters have been converted or are in progress of being hooked up, and three major sub-HOAs in Phase I have indicated their desire to participate in the water rights leasing program, we are well on our way to maximizing our objectives of leasing the water rights we have available. In addition to helping WBVGC meet its funding requirements for the LIP program, maintaining curb appeal, and protecting property values…..the sub-HOAs can save an estimated 30 to 35% compared to existing City of Peoria water rates…..which will be increasing 5.1% over the next 15 months. WBVGC is guaranteeing no water rate increases for the participants in the water rights leasing program for 5 years.

Has digging and trenching been delayed for the LIP because the City of Peoria will not issue permits?
No. Trenching is anticipated to begin for the LIP on Monday, 4 May. Before any digging could begin numerous pre-planning tasks had to be accomplished which included a Blue Stake review, GPS staking for the main lines and lateral pipes, equipment positioning, delivery of product, etc. The City did modify engineering document requirements for coring under City streets. This did delay BeeLine construction’s receipt of the permit for drilling under the streets. These permits should be received within 10-14 days and should have little impact on keeping the LIP on schedule.

Is the Lakes Bistro Restaurant closing?
No. The Lakes Bistro Restaurant is only closing for the month of May for renovations and the installation of new equipment in the kitchen. When the Bistro reopens members will find a much more pleasing environment and the entire patio awning structure will have been scrapped down and re-painted. Both restaurant tenants have indicated a desire to extend their leases and Roy Chapman and Tom Lodge are completing final negotiations on new leases which will improve WBVBC revenues and provide additional accountability for both restaurant operations.

Golf Course Maintenance Update (5/4/15)

With the LIP project underway I am happy to report we are moving forward. The sand has been replaced on 8 holes at the RJP Estate Planning Lakes GC and new main line pipe and new irrigation wire is in the ground on a few holes. Many of our trees have been pruned and all the stumps are being removed. I have been asked by many why the old sand in the bunkers is not going to the Vistas course. The answer is because the old sand is no longer sand. It is dirt. It is heavily contaminated with silt and clay and could make a bad situation worse. The contaminated sand will be used as backfill on much of the new pipe going into the ground. The old fill is very rocky and not ideal for burying pipe. We anticipate completing the bunker renovation in two weeks. We will then begin addressing the 28.3 acres of turf that will be removed. We will be doing our best in the next several weeks to keep the Vistas GC in good shape. But please keep in mind, it is beginning to transition from winter to summer grass. In order for there to be a successful transition we will need to do some verticutting of tees, greens, and fairways with some occasional aerifying. The grass at the Vistas GC is a living breathing plant. Not artificial turf. So these practices are absolutely necessary. I apologize ahead of time for any inconvenience this may cause. With that being said, I hope everyone enjoys a pleasant and safe summer.

Handicap Committee Update

Basically, if you play...you post!

Section 4 of the USGA Handicap System Manual contains the following definition, "The game of golf is based on the premise that a player will play as well as the player can play. Under the USGA Handicap System, each player is required to record a hole score for a hole not finished, not played, or not played under the principles of the Rules of Golf...."

Most golfers know what their ESC (Equitable Stroke Control) maximum is.

This is the most you can record on a given hole, for handicap purposes, based on your Course Handicap. The purpose of ESC is to keep that occasional really bad hole, like a 12 on #18 at the Lakes, from changing a Handicap Index too much. But there are many situations when ESC does not apply. Here are some of those situations and how to score the hole(s) involved. They do not make your score unacceptable for posting purposes.

Q: What if I used a mulligan?
A: You must record par plus your handicap strokes for the hole played for handicap purposes.

Q: What if I picked up on a hole or the putt was conceded?
A: You must record your “most likely score” for handicap purposes. This is used any time you start but don’t finish a hole. Your most likely score is the number of strokes already taken plus, in your best judgment, the number of strokes needed to complete the hole most of the time. If it doesn’t go over your ESC, then use that number.

Q: What if the pro hit a shot for me?
A: Use par plus your handicap strokes for the hole.

Q: What if we were allowed a “free” throw or to kick our ball in the event we played?
A: Use par plus your handicap strokes for the hole.

Q: I lost a match 4 and 3 so I only completed 15 holes. Should I post an 18 hole score?
A: YES For holes that were not played, record a score of par plus any handicap strokes you are entitled to based on full Course Handicap.

Q: How many holes do you have to play to have a score for handicap purposes?
A: # of Holes Played - - Score to Post
1 – 6 No score
7 – 12 Post a nine hole score (par plus handicap for holes not played)
13 – 18 Post an 18 hole score (par plus handicap for holes not played)

Westbrook Village wins back the Cup

2015_RyderCup_WBVGC

Sixteen members of Westbrook Village Golf Club (WBVGC) won the 2015 Ryder Cup from Sun City Country Club (SCC) over the weekend of March 21st and 22nd at the Vistas. This annual spring event, which started in 2013 and saw WBVGC win the first, with Sun City winning last year, ended with WBVGC’s come from behind victory. The weekend started with a Dinner for the players and their wives at SCCC on Friday evening, where the players were introduced.

Saturday’s first day of tournament, found a crowded first Tee box at SCCC, with players and wives cheering on their team as each member teed off. The first day was a two man team event with holes 1-6 being a Scramble, holes 7-12 being an Alternate shot and holes 13-18 being one Best Net. There were 8 points available and SCCC took a 5-3 lead at the end of the day.

Day two, which was a 16 individual Match Play event, took place at the Vistas. It took 12 ½ points to win the Cup. The players wives started to gather on the hill overlooking the 18th holes as the first foursomes started coming in. As more foursomes came in, the crowd started growing more excited as the players and wives were counting the points coming in. With three players still out on the course, WBV needed one more point to get to 12 ½. They won 1 ½ more points to win the event, 13-11.

Lunch followed at the Link’s, for the players and their wives, with SCCC presenting the Ryder Cup to WBVGC. A great time was had by all. The Cup and a picture of the team, should be on display in the Vista’s Pro Shop in the coming weeks.

2015 Team Members were: Rick Axelrad, Lee Bolender, Al Curtis, Roger Curtis, Fred Elfritz, Ron Eppley, Russ Fowler, Steve Jobe, Neil Kleine, Pete Michalowski, Bob Oracheff, George Potter, Ron Sacco, Andy Schneider, Jeff Study, and Erv Swanson.

Congratulations to the 2015 Ryder Cup Team.

Superintendent Update - March 10, 2015

I would like to inform everyone that we will be lowering the mowing heights on the tees and fairways at both golf courses during the month of April. The lowering of the mowing heights is a necessary step in stimulating Bermuda grass growth during the spring transition from winter rye grass to summer Bermuda grass. We will also be applying a herbicide to the over seeded areas. The herbicide will gradually slow the winter rye grass so that the Bermuda grass will prevail during the transition period. I’d like to thank everyone ahead of time for their patience and cooperation and hope everyone enjoys the rest of the spring.

GCM Update 1/21/15 - Tilapia Season

waterresource
Lakeside residents who have lived by a desert lake system for more than one year know about Tilapia fish (AKA Nile Perch). They may be seen feeding on algae in large schools during the summer, but they are really noticed during a winter die-off incident.

The question that is frequently raised is “why do you stock Tilapia, if you know they are going to die each winter?” The answer is that they provide an invaluable source of algae control nine months out of the year, without the use of harsh chemicals. In many cases, they do not die-off each winter. While some years there are very few dead Tilapia, other years it can be a ‘bumper crop’ Why is the die-off so bad some years? Seasonally, it is the rate of temperature change. When we experience an unusually long warm fall season, then winter temperatures hit suddenly, it causes the water temperature to drop below 55 F very quickly. Tilapia can tolerate a gradual change and survive, but do not fair well with such a drastic change in temperature.

The death and decomposition cycle of the Tilapia fish is very important to lake management decisions. First, they die and sink to the bottom, where they start to decompose. When the swim bladder fills with gases (usually 2 to 4 weeks), the half rotten fish will rise to the surface. It is critical that the fish be removed ASAP as ammonia and other nutrients are released into the water. Catfish are often stock in fall months, as they consume dead and dying tilapia.

Thank you for your time and understanding
Bob Revolinski, Aquatic Biologist.

Men WIN "Battle of the Sexes"

The 18-Hole Couples had their annual "Battle of the Sexes" to determine whether the toilet seat would be up or down for the year. The women have won the past three years in commanding fashion. However, this year had a turn of tides and men were able to defeat the women obtaining the right to leave the toilet seat up all year long. The match was close with only a 8 shot margin and more impressive was the fact that every men's and women's teams shot an under par best-ball score. Great playing!

20th Anniversary Golf Outing Results

We had a great turn out to celebrate our 20th Anniversary. The course was completely filled up with 138 members. Of the 138 players we had 22 of the original charter members that purchased the club 20 years ago. They were as follows: Kathy Daly, Ron & Gwen Zimmer, Ray & Martie Morrison, Mary Hutchinson, Dick & Joanne Perez, Stan Wong, Carol Chessin, Betty Ashby, Judie Mcleod, Bill & Kathy Vogt, Gary Adams, Norm Richter, Erma Beerman, Bill & Betty Sommer, Erv Swanson, Tom & Marian Lodge.

20141124_20AnniversaryChampions

The event began with an 18 hole straight scramble with a few twists on the course. On hole #8 golf shop employee Kris was hitting drives for each team and golf shop employee Cary was hitting drives on hole #14. The winning team was Dave & Shelley Frey and Steve & Rita Jobe with a scramble score of 49.7. The top five teams won gift shop credit and the top three teams received trophies for their great playing. Closest to the Pin winners received WBVGC 20th Anniversary commemorative candy bowls. The Links Grill and WBVGC donated four $20 gift cards each. Every players name from the event was placed in a bag and names were drawn for the winners of the gift cards.

Chef Peter of the Links Grill put on an amazing $4.99 buffet which included: Vegetable & Fruit Platter, Chips & Dip, Meatballs, Quesadilla, Pulled Pork Sandwich and his famous Onion Rings. Along with the buffet the Links Grill had $2 margaritas. We would like to thank everyone involved including Peg Jensen who came up with the idea, Cindy Swallow for decorating, Dachelle Frey, Kris Desmarais, Cary Kohatsu and Brandon Evans. The event was a great beginning for the season to come!

Matthew Fitzpatrick Earns European Tour Card

243394_m16Some of you may remember a young man that was practicing at the back of the Vistas range most of last Winter. He was the 2013 US Amateur Champion and 2013 Open Championship Low Amateur, Matt Fitzpatrick. RUMORS.....RUMORS.....RUMORS (#2)

Rumors are like weeds in your yard, they are a nuisance, hard to control, and it takes time and effort to get rid of them.

Let me clarify/correct 3 more recent rumors ……………

  1. The golf course has been sold. UNTRUE… The Lakes golf course has not been sold. “Naming rights” have been sold to RJP Estate Planning that allows for their name on the Pro Shop signage, new scoreboard, golf cart (decals), scorecards, and range balls. Funds from the naming rights package go directly to the Lakes Irrigation Program (LIP).
  2. The new scoreboard must have cost a fortune. UNTRUE…The new scoreboard was a donation from a WBVGC member.
  3. WBVGC is going to start selling water to Westbrook Village residents for their homes. UNTRUE…WBVGC is considering the lease of water rights we have available and a water distribution program whereby we can provide non-potable water to the HOA and various sub-HOAs for irrigation of their common areas. Legal documents have been drafted and engineering design work has been completed. We are awaiting final approval from the City of Peoria for approval and the issuance of permits.

The next time you hear someone making or broadcasting rumors, please stop them and ask for their source of information. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion; however, spreading rumors and misinformation is counter-productive for all concerned.

RUMORS.....RUMORS.....RUMORS

Rumors are like weeds in your yard, they are a nuisance, hard to control, and it takes time and effort to get rid of them.

Let me clearly correct 3 recent rumors that seem to be making the rounds.

  1. We ARE over-seeding both courses for the 2014-2015 season. The Lakes course has been prepped and seed will be sown beginning on Monday, 29 September.
  2. The WBVGC Board of Directors DOES NOT anticipate any assessments in conjunction with funding the Lakes Irrigation Replacement Project (LIP).
  3. The Sunset Bistro Restaurant at the Lakes Course is NOT closing. We will begin negotiating new leases which expire early next summer for both restaurants in the next few months.

The next time you hear someone making or broadcasting rumors, please stop them and ask for their source of information. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion; however, spreading rumors and misinformation is counter-productive for all concerned.

President's Message

Welcome to the 2014-2015 golf season, it promises to be an exciting year at Westbrook Village Golf Club. I hope all of you have had a wonderful summer and look forward to the events planned for our members and guests in late 2014. On Labor Day, the newly expanded practice putting green at the Lakes, with a Tifdwarf grass putting surface, opened for play.

Beginning in October the Lakes course will be named the RJP Estate Planning Lakes Course. You will see a sign above the Pro Shop, a scoreboard and score cards with the new name, and range balls and rental carts will have the RJP logo.

Our next Member’s Forum is planned for 12 November. This year WBVGC will celebrate our 20th anniversary and we plan a (no fee) golf outing followed by cake and ice cream at the Vistas on Monday afternoon, 24 November. On Wednesday 26 November the MGA will hold its annual Thanksgiving Day Member/Guest tournament; on 6 December we will host the first annual RJP Estate Planning Invitational Tournament; and, the annual MGA Team Event will be held on 3 and 10 December. Combined with all the holiday parties and golf events the season should be off to a fantastic start.

Your Board of Directors and Managers have been working diligently over the last six months to gather information, obtain bid proposals, and put all of the pieces together to make the Lakes Irrigation Systems Replacement project a reality. The final construction bids were received last week and the project is beginning to take shape. I want to take this opportunity to share with you the current facts and plans associated with the irrigation system replacement project.

  • $1,932,500 Irrigation construction (including all labor, boring for road crossings, specialty equipment leasing, taxes, etc.)
  • $ 186,000 Xeriscape decomposed granite delivered and installed (30 acres)
  • $ 4,400* Drip irrigation material for trees in xeriscaping areas
  • $ 26,650* Replacement of sand in bunkers
  • $ 55,858* Reseed greens with Tifdwarf sprigs and top dressing (2.5 acres)
  • $ 35,280* In-house labor 3 employees for 21 weeks ($14 per hour)
  • $2,240,688 Total Estimated Cost
    * Work to be completed in-house

The following is a planned schedule for the irrigation system project:

  • Sep 2014 Spray greens to begin to kill off Bermuda roots…no impact to play
  • Nov 2014 Complete agreements with construction contractor and bank
  • Apr 2015 Spray greens to kill off Bermuda roots
  • Apr 2015 Lakes course closed for play on 20 April
  • Apr 2015 Begin construction of irrigation system replacement
  • Jun 2015 Prepare greens for Tifdwarf sprigging
  • Jul 2015 Replace sand in bunkers
  • Jul 2015 Complete xeriscaping, granite installation and relocation of soil & rock
  • Aug 2015 Completion of irrigation system, testing and acceptance
  • Sep 2015 Over seeding
  • Oct 2015 Lakes course re-opens for play

Financing for the irrigation project has been offered by three different banks who are bidding for the business. The borrowing will be an interest only line of credit that can be drawn against during the construction phase. Subsequently, a 20-year fixed rate loan would be entered into for any outstanding balance upon project completion and acceptance.

The water rights and business member programs are projected to generate funds to cover the LIP expenditures and prevent future assessments. Contributing to a positive cash flow objective will be savings resulting from reduced golf course maintenance and xeriscaping efficiencies and are estimated to be in the $125,000 per year range. Cost benefits in changing our commercial banking and audit service relationships should make up another $15,000 annually.

In addition, David Escobedo has taken pro-active steps to implement preventive maintenance programs for all our major equipment assets to avoid and/or minimize costly replacements in the future.

And, in continuance of our support of the NCAA ladies golf programs, 3-year contract extensions have been signed with the University of Wisconsin and George Fox University for WBVGC to host their annual tournaments.

This past spring, with the outstanding efforts of David Frey, Dachelle Frey and Rick Axelrad we began our business membership program, course naming rights, tee marker upgrades, and tee box marker, and enhancement program efforts. These combined efforts have raised more than $175,000 to date. Please support our business members during the coming year and thank them for their participation at WBVGC. And, if you haven’t already purchased your tee box markers…please contact Dachelle, we only have a few spots open….so don’t be left out!

Efforts are on-going to finalize water rights lease agreements with the Westbrook Village HOA and numerous sub-HOAs within Westbrook Village wherein WBVGC would provide water for irrigation of the HOAs common areas. This will create a win-win situation for both the Club and HOAs…with WBVGC allowing the HOAs to draw water from the Club’s well sources at a cost less than the City of Peoria. These revenues would off-set a major portion of the cost of the irrigation project.

Growing membership is always at the top of our priority list…and, the summer period has produced several new members. We would like to welcome all of our new members who have recently joined WBVGC. Rick Axelrad and his membership committee have initiated aggressive programs to attract new members to the Club and we should begin to see these positive results materialize between now and early November.

Thank you for your continued support and involvement at WBVGC. Your membership and active participation make the Club what it is today….providing a financially sound, stable and competitive golf experience for all of us to enjoy.

Happy golfing,
Steve

Lakes Irrigation Project (LIP) Voting Package

Within the next few days, please be on the lookout for an “ELECTRONIC VOTING PACKAGE” that will be sent to you via email. The electronic voting option was included in the latest Bylaw revisions approved this past summer. Your Board now has all the information, contracts, and financial arrangements in place to make the Lakes Irrigation Project (LIP) a reality.

Our highly successful hole-sponsorship program, tee marker purchases, enhancement fund and patron contributions, sale of the naming rights for the Lakes course, soon to be implemented water rights leasing and water distribution system project, and reduced golf course operating expenses are anticipated to fully fund the Lakes Irrigation Project (LIP) program without any member assessments.

Below is a current breakout of the estimated costs for the LIP program:

  • 2,240,688 Total Estimated Cost

* Work to be completed in-house

The following is the planned schedule for the LIP program:

  • Nov 2014 Complete agreements with construction contractor and bank
  • Apr 2015 Spray greens to kill old Bermuda grass roots
  • Apr 2015 Lakes course closed for play on 20 April
  • Apr 2015 Begin construction of irrigation system replacement
  • Jun 2015 Prepare greens for newer Tifdwarf sprigging (seed)
  • Jul 2015 Replace sand in bunkers
  • Jul 2015 Complete xeriscaping, granite installation and relocation of soil & rock
  • Aug 2015 Completion of irrigation system, testing and acceptance
  • Sep 2015 Over seeding
  • Oct 2015 Lakes course re-opens for play

Financing for the Lakes Irrigation Project (LIP) has been secured through Chase Bank. We now have a line of credit for the construction phase, and we will only begin paying interest at the time we draw down funds. Subsequently, a 20-year fixed rate loan will be concluded for any outstanding balance upon the LIP program completion and acceptance.

Thank you for your continued support of the Lakes Irrigation Project (LIP) and the numerous business members who have made this project possible. Your YES vote to proceed with the Lakes Irrigation Project (LIP) will help insure the successful future of this great golf club facility where we are all so proud to be members!

Thank You,

WBVGC Board of Directors

Around Town: Peoria in Forbes

According to Forbes Magazine, Peoria and Gilbert rank in the top 25 suburbs of places to retire within the United States. Peoria was cited for its hospitable climate, good mass transit, low crime rate, and its tax rate at 8% is below the national average. This is the second instance in which Peoria has been cited as one of the top cities for retirees. Peoria was listed in Kiplinger’s Personal Finance Magazine as well and reported by the Arizona Republic. Only three cities made both lists: Peoria AZ; Naperville IL; and Cary, NC. The Forbes article points out that researchers earlier had predicted that Baby boomers would more likely retire to inner city areas, whereas in fact, they are moving to the suburbs. The magazine used crime statistics, air quality ratings, cost of living indices, and proximity to colleges and hospitals as criteria for rating the top 25 cities.

Peoria Touted as City for Early Retirees

The Arizona Republic had a great article about the city of Peoria and the benefits it offers for early retirees.

"Peoria came in No. 7 among the Top 10 Best U.S. Cities for Early Retirement, according to a Washington, D.C.-based publisher of business forecasts and personal finance advice. Peoria was the only Arizona city to make the top 10 list and placed above such cities as Virginia Beach and Honolulu. A majority of the cities highlighted by Kiplinger are suburbs of larger cities, such as Bellevue,Wash. outside Seattle and Sandy Springs, Ga. outside Atlanta. Peoria’s proximity to big-city amenities was noted, along with its low crime rate, low cost of living and favorable taxes..." Read More at AZcentral.com

New Scorecard Sponsors!

ScorecardSponsors You will notice new scorecards at the both the Vistas and the Lakes courses. This summer we obtained two new sponsors, one for each courses scorecards. As you may or may not know, we recently had both courses re-rated. With the re-rating our course ratings, slopes and hole handicaps changed slightly, which means we would need new scorecards. The club decided to seek out new sponsors to help cover the costs of new scorecards. The idea was to have two real estate companies as the sponsors, being that our membership goes hand in hand with the sales of homes in Westbrook Village. The first two agents to step up to the partnership were: Bobbi Martin (Sotheby and Russ Lyon) and Logan Hall (Remax Renaissance and Logan Hall Team). Read More Here

Vistas Course and New Range Open for Play!

RangeThe Vistas Course is now open for play as of October 18, 2013. The Lakes has begun overseeding and will be closed through Sunday, November 3rd. Please stop by the Vistas to take a look at our completed range, practice tee projects, and near perfect overseed. All has been a great success due to our Head Superintendent David Escobedo and his hard working maintenance staff. You may also notice the new permanent range yardage stones positioned across the range tee. All the stones were done in house by WBVGC Staff Members.PracticeGreen This year has also brought a new sponsor to our range. Casey Bell of American Family Insurance has sponsored our range for the year with the purchase of 7200 new Srixon range balls. We have set up a sponsors sign at the front of the range as well as placed the American Family logo on the vistas range balls. This year has already kicked off on a high note and we plan on it continuing into a great year at Westbrook Village Golf Club!
