2024 GF Westbrook Invitational
Hosted by the George Fox University

The 12th Annual George Fox University Westbrook NCAA Invitational wrapped up in spectacular fashion, delivering a thrilling climax that kept everyone on the edge of their seats until the very last moment. The battle for top spots unfolded on the iconic Lakes Course, with the final round on Sunday turning into a dramatic showcase of skill and determination. The lead changed hands repeatedly in an exciting back-and-forth, highlighting the incredible talent of these athletes. Their exceptional performances across the demanding 17th and 18th holes were a fitting finale to a tournament brimming with outstanding golfing prowess.

Before we get to the details, we had a very special spectator for the final round, Linda Vollstedt, at the 18th green and she gave a nice tribute to the achievements in women's golf during the awards. From 1980 to 2001, Vollstedt led the women's golf team at ASU as head coach. Throughout her career as a coach, she achieved victory in six NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championships in the 1990s. In recognition of her contributions to women's sports, Vollstedt was inducted into the International Women's Sports Hall of Fame in 2003 and the Arizona Sports Hall of Fame in 2009.

As mentioned earlier, this year's event was a real nail-biter, teeming with excitement and suspense. The athletes faced the formidable challenge of navigating numerous "casual water" lakes that emerged in the aftermath of the great flood during the practice round. The competition was fierce and the leaderboard was a tightly packed race. Redlands, Claremont Mudd Scripps, Trinity, George Fox, and Emory University were all neck and neck, each within striking distance of the lead for the majority of the final round.

The tension reached its peak on holes 17 and 18, where the Redlands players demonstrated exceptional skill and determination. They managed to conquer the most daunting holes on the course, pulling ahead to secure a 2-shot lead over Claremont Mudd Scripps and a comfortable 4-shot margin over Emory University. Trinity University and George Fox University finished in a tie for fourth, 5 shots behind the leaders. In the unpredictable world of team golf, anything can happen, and this match was a testament to that fact. It was an incredibly close contest from start to finish.

A hearty congratulations to the University of Redlands Bulldogs for their outstanding play and exemplary sportsmanship throughout the week! Their victory was not just a win but a story of overcoming adversity, showcasing the spirit of true champions.

The individual competition mirrored the intensity and nail-biting suspense of the team event, with the leaderboard as crowded and competitive as rush-hour on the 101. At one point, the drama intensified as we witnessed a staggering nine-way tie for the lead, with 15 players just two shots back, ready to pounce. Impressively, players from seven out of the ten participating teams found themselves within a mere two shots of the lead during various stages of the round, adding to the electrifying atmosphere.

Esther Lee from Claremont Mudd Scripps made an explosive start, her scorecard reading like the opening sequence of an action movie: eagle, par, birdie (2,4,2). This thrilling beginning catapulted her to the early lead. Not to be outdone, Makensie Toole of George Fox University unleashed a birdie barrage, nailing four in her first eight holes, while Irene Jun of Claremont Mudd Scripps wasn't far behind with three birdies in her first six. As the tension mounted heading into the back nine, the University of Redlands duo of Iris Liu and Andrea York stepped up their game. Liu birdied holes 13 through 15, and York added birdies on 16 and 17, both coming tantalizingly close but ultimately falling short of the 2024 Individual Champion title, which was claimed by George Fox University's very own Makensie Toole firing a final round 69 to win the event at -3 139.

The weekend was a showcase of golfing excellence, marking a historic first for the event as the entire All Tournament Team (Top 6) finished at par or better. The Lakes course, known for its daunting challenge, was tamed by these exceptional players who skillfully navigated its intricacies, especially in the challenging conditions following the rain. This event was a testament to the incredible talent and resilience of the competitors, making it a weekend of golf to remember.

NCAA Women's Golf has made remarkable strides, breaking through numerous barriers to reach its current standing. Westbrook Village Golf Club proudly plays a pivotal role in this journey by hosting two premier events: the Big10's Westbrook Invitational hosted by the University of Wisconsin at the Vistas, and the George Fox Westbrook Invitational hosted by the NCAA Division III National Champion, George Fox University Bruins.

It's a common misconception that these events only serve the universities, but in reality, they offer a symbiotic relationship with the Golf Club that's often underappreciated. Many club members might not realize that the universities' participation is also a financial benefit for the club. This engagement is a profitable endeavor, consistently acknowledged in our annual budgeting process. Furthermore, finding well-maintained clubs that support their events and the growth of golf is a formidable challenge for universities. These events, therefore, are not just competitions; they are opportunities for national recognition, attracting players' families and friends to our club and community.

The impact extends beyond the greens and fairways; each year, the exposure and connections from these events lead to the sale of multiple homes in the community and golf memberships. Although it may be challenging to share our impeccably maintained courses for these events, the investment pays off handsomely over time. The warmth and hospitality shown by Westbrook have left a lasting impression on players, coaches, and spectators alike. They become our ambassadors, spreading the word about the exceptional experience of being a member here.

Your support of these events is instrumental in helping our club grow and flourish in such positive directions. So, a heartfelt thank you to everyone who contributes to making these events a success. Together, we're not just hosting golf tournaments; we're nurturing the future of the sport and building a stronger, more vibrant community at Westbrook Village Golf Club.

George Fox University started its women's golf team only 17 years ago, but that hasn't stopped its players from making history.
