Early mornings and evenings are not only beautiful times to enjoy our courses, but also when you’ll often find Adopt-a-Hole volunteers hard at work. These dedicated members fill fairway divots and repair ball marks on the greens, taking care to avoid interfering with golfers.
WBGC’s Adopt-a-Hole program began at the Lakes in 2016 and expanded to the Vistas in 2017. Today, near 100 members volunteer weekly, helping maintain both courses. While participation is strong, additional volunteers are always welcome to ensure every hole receives the attention it deserves.
Dave Escobedo, Director of Agronomy, and his team provide divot mix, buckets, repair tools, and other necessary supplies, while Brandon Evans, Director of Golf supports the program by arranging carts and assisting with volunteer recruitment.
Although some volunteers participate year-round, the official season runs November 1 through April 30. Each volunteer typically spends about an hour per week maintaining their adopted hole, using 6–10 gallons of divot mix. Together, the team contributes more than 2,000 hours annually and applies over 5,000 gallons of divot mix—an impressive commitment that makes a noticeable difference in the appearance and playability of both courses.
The program is about more than course maintenance. It is also an opportunity for members to give back to their club.
Ron Sellnow, a member since 2019 who maintains Lakes #14 alongside Terry Balliet, Ron shares:
“There are many benefits of being a member, but one of the best is being able to play on well-maintained golf courses. By participating in the Adopt-a-Hole program, I have the opportunity to give something back to the club.”
Dean and Liz Armitage maintain Vistas #8 alongside Dewey Cannon. Dean shares:
“I actually enjoy walking out my back gate as the sun sets, filling divots, and fixing ball marks on the green.”
Thank you to all our Adopt-a-Hole volunteers! Your time and dedication help keep the Lakes and Vistas courses in excellent condition for everyone to enjoy.
